The MLB and Vancouver Mounties made a big announcement today: the ABL has officially approved the relocation from Vancouver to Montreal. Paying homage to their history, the new franchise will be named the Montreal Rays. The franchise, then also named the Rays, was in Tampa Bay from 1998-2016. “Not just our franchise’s history,” owner James Wagner stated, “but humanity’s history. Billions of years ago, before humans existed, there were still rays in Earth’s oceans. We owe them quite a bit.” He added, “I am sure some even swam up the St. Lawrence River.” While ray sightings are no longer common along the St. Lawrence, replicas can be found at the Montreal Biodome. Today baseball enthusiasts and former Expo fans alike at the Biodome to protest the name choice. “What kind of a Canadian name is that?” long-time Montreal native Fred exclaimed. “I’m just here to see the Lynx,” 12-year-old Suzie quipped. Newly elected president Drake also could not help but chime in. “I think it’s great that the two teams in Canada, the Jays and the Rays, have “ay” in common. Or should I say… eh?” “Also,” he added, “look at a picture of a ray and a maple leaf side by side. I think they are related.” Surprised by the negative reaction, ABL Commissioner Aaron Dunham attempted to do damage control by shifting the blame. “It was Erick Blasco’s idea.” “This is NOT what I signed up for,” said GM Mitch Zoltowski, “but at least my team’s primary color isn’t purple.” With Montreal on the brink of Canada’s biggest scandal since the maple syrup heist of 2011, Commissioner Dunham and the ABL quickly reversed course. Everyone, please welcome (back) to Major League Baseball and the ABL, the MONTREAL EXPOS!
